CLASS 10 NCERT ENGLISH FIRE AND ICE SOLUTION

FIRE-AND-ICE

Fire and Ice

Question 1. There are many ideas about how the world will ‘end’. Do you think the world will end someday? Have you ever wondered what would happen if the Sun got so hot that it ‘burst’ or became colder and colder?
There are indeed many theories about how the world might end. I believe the world will eventually end because everything that begins must come to an end. If the Sun became so hot that it burst, the Earth would be destroyed immediately as nothing could survive such intense heat. On the other hand, if the Sun grew colder and colder, life would also cease since sunlight is essential for living things to survive.

Question 2. What do ‘fire’ and ‘ice’ represent for Frost?
For Frost, ‘fire’ symbolizes desire, greed, lust, conflict, and fury. ‘Ice’ stands for cruelty, intolerance, rigidity, coldness, indifference, and hatred.

Question 3. What is the rhyme scheme of the poem? How does it highlight the contrasting ideas?
The poem follows the rhyme scheme a b a a b c b c b. This pattern emphasizes the contrast between ‘fire’ and ‘ice’ by alternating and weaving these opposing ideas throughout the poem. Frost suggests both could bring about the end of the world—fire through desire and passion, ice through coldness and hate. The rhyme scheme supports this interplay between opposing forces, reinforcing the poem’s theme that both extremes have destructive power.
